A few years ago the people closest to me started coming to me with the same question. Their children were graduating from college and wanted to work in local government. Smart, motivated young people who genuinely cared about their communities and had no idea where to start.

I got excited every single time. Because I remember exactly what it felt like to be that person.

I want to be honest about something. I didn't have a mentor, not for most of my career. I figured it out slowly, imperfectly, and largely on my own. It wasn't until very late in my career that I finally found someone who showed me what real mentorship looked like.

"That someone didn't exist for me when I needed them most. I want to be that person for you."

After earning my MPA degree, I spent twenty years working my way up through management and sitting on the hiring side of the table. I reviewed thousands of applications. I watched bright, capable people get passed over not because they weren't qualified, but because nobody had ever explained the rules of the game.
